Spend some quality time out and about in the family car this summer

Summer is fast approaching and it’s time once again to dig through garden sheds and dust off those barbecues and beach balls.

Here in the UK we are lucky enough to have countless options for fun-packed days out with the kids.

Whether you intend to head off in the car for the day, or plan to make a longer trip of it, here are some ideas for ways to spend time with your kids this summer.

Take time to top up their education No matter which part of the UK you are exploring there are loads of options for an educational day out.

Museums are both child-friendly and stimulating, but as well as the more traditional museums, why not branch out? All across the UK you will find heritage centres covering everything from fairgrounds to mining communities. Or, explore your nearest science and technology museum for a truly interactive learning experience.   Transport is another great way for kids to explore the past while messing about on a steam railway or enjoying a pleasure boat cruise.

Be at one with the animal kingdom. Why not visit a zoo, sea-life centre or city farm? Or there are animal sanctuaries dotted about our fair isle covering everything from reptiles to rabbits, open to the public.

Take time to get creative Kids love to be creative and a day spent making something together can be a strong bonding experience for all the family.

Check out the nearest craft centre to your home. These offer a wide range of activities, including glass blowing, pottery, ceramics or painting. The possibilities are as vast as your imagination.

Take time to get down with nature After months spent cooped up inside, it makes sense to haul the kids into the great outdoors, so shake off those winter blues and pack a picnic.

In the UK we are blessed with literally hundreds of country parks and great swathes of nature reserves. Contact the National Trust for a list of historic houses and gardens open to the public near you.

Have fun with woodland adventures, outdoor mazes and jungle gymnasiums. Adventure playgrounds are perfect for letting off a bit of steam and getting some fresh air at the same time.

In the UK we are never more than 250 km from the nearest beach, and most of us are a lot closer than that. Why not head for the coast and enjoy a day building sandcastles, exploring caves or body-boarding?

Take time to get physical When it comes to getting physical, we really are spoilt for choice. Every family has their favourite sports and ways of getting exercise, but here are just some of the options available.

For the outdoors, you could take a drive to a golf course, horse-riding stables or sailing school. Chances are high that you will find a zip wire, hamster wheel or rowing club close enough for a day-trip. Look online to locate the nearest water-slide park or toboggan run. Or you could just drive somewhere beautiful and go for a good old fashioned walk.

For those rainy days, plenty of indoor soft play centres have sprung up in recent years and will keep the kids happy for hours. There are also indoor fun pools and leisure centres, bowling alleys and climbing walls. A tired kid is a content kid – so go ahead and wear them out!   Whatever adventure you decide to take with the family this summer, make sure you have adequate car insurance
